# Podstatus data methodology and limitations

> This document explains where Podstatus data comes from, how often it is checked, what each metric means, and what it does not prove.

## Why methodology matters

Podcast platforms expose different kinds of public data. A chart rank, search position, review, YouTube view, and OP3 download answer different questions and should not be merged into one undefined “growth score.” Podstatus keeps these signals together for convenience while preserving their separate meanings.

## Chart rankings

### Sources

- Apple Podcasts charts;
- Spotify podcast charts;
- iVoox charts.

### Collection cadence

Podstatus checks available chart positions every hour. This allows the product to record changes that a daily-only snapshot can miss.

### Interpretation

A chart position is a relative rank on a specific platform, in a specific country or region, in a specific chart or category, at a point in time. It is not:

- a verified download count;
- an all-time popularity score;
- directly comparable across different platforms or countries;
- proof that a particular campaign caused the movement.

“Updated hourly” describes the Podstatus checking cadence. Source platforms can publish or refresh their own charts on different schedules.

## Reviews and ratings

Podstatus collects reviews from Apple Podcasts country storefronts and Podchaser. Review availability depends on what each source exposes publicly.

Reviews can provide qualitative feedback and social proof. Apple Podcasts states that ratings and reviews do not directly influence Apple Podcasts Charts or Search. Podstatus therefore does not represent a higher review count as a guaranteed way to improve rankings.

## Keyword positions

Podstatus checks selected search phrases daily on Apple Podcasts and Spotify in supported markets.

A keyword position records where a podcast appeared for that query at collection time. Search positions can vary by:

- platform;
- market or country;
- metadata changes;
- competing content;
- source-platform ranking changes.

A before-and-after movement is useful evidence, but it does not by itself establish that one edit caused the change.

## SEO Analyzer

The SEO Analyzer evaluates observable podcast metadata and feed fields, including:

- titles and descriptions;
- categories;
- artwork;
- RSS channel structure;
- Apple-specific RSS fields;
- recent episode metadata;
- selected keyword usage.

Its output is a prioritized audit, not privileged access to a platform's private ranking algorithm. Recommendations improve completeness, clarity, and alignment with published requirements; no recommendation guarantees a search rank.

## Competitor analysis

Competitor Intelligence uses Apple Podcasts chart observations. Shows receive stronger similarity signals when they:

- appear in the same categories or markets;
- overlap repeatedly;
- occupy nearby chart positions.

This surfaces operational competitors for chart visibility. It does not prove audience duplication, editorial similarity, or a commercial relationship.

## OP3 data

OP3 is the source for compatible download analytics shown in Podstatus. The podcast feed must be configured to send eligible requests through OP3. Bot filtering, measurement rules, and availability follow OP3's methodology.

Podstatus organizes connected OP3 data into episode, geography, application, referrer, operating-system, time-zone, and trend views. Podstatus does not estimate missing first-party downloads when OP3 data is not available.

## YouTube data

Podstatus uses public YouTube API data to match podcast episodes with videos and report public performance such as views. It does not request private YouTube account access. YouTube-derived data is deleted or refreshed within 30 days in accordance with the published Podstatus privacy policy.

## Historical coverage

Tracking history generally begins when a podcast is added to Podstatus. Public current data can sometimes be fetched immediately, but Podstatus cannot reconstruct every historical chart position, search result, or review state that was never observed.

## Geographic coverage

Podstatus describes coverage as 175 countries because it monitors the international markets in which its supported podcast sources publish relevant chart or review data. Availability is source-dependent:

- not every platform publishes every category in every country;
- a platform can add, remove, or rename markets and categories;
- a podcast may not rank in a selected chart;
- temporary source failures can delay a collected observation.
