Ali Abdur-Rahman al-Huthaify also spelled Ali Al-Hudhaify or Ali Al-Hodaifi, is a highly distinguished Quran reciter and Imam from Saudi Arabia. Born in 1947 in the village of Al-Qarn Al-Mustaqeem in the Mecca Province, he grew up in a religious family with his father also being an Imam. Sheikh Ali al-Huthaify is widely respected for his profound knowledge of the Quranic sciences and his unique, deep, and tranquil recitation style, which is instantly recognizable and has a powerful emotional impact on listeners. He holds certifications (Ijazat) in various Qira’at (recitation styles) of the Holy Quran, having studied under numerous prominent scholars of his time. Among the various narrations he has mastered, he is particularly known for his recitation in the Qaloon ‘an Nafi’ narration. Qaloon ‘an Nafi’ is one of the ten authentic Qira’at, transmitted through Imam Qaloon from Imam Nafi’ al-Madani. This narration features distinct rules and pronunciations compared to the more common Hafs ‘an Asim, and it is prevalent in North African countries and parts of the Middle East. Digital Quranic archives feature numerous recordings of his complete Quranic recitations and individual surahs in different Qira’at, including Qaloon. His notable career includes serving as an Imam at the Quba Mosque, and most significantly, he has been a long-standing Imam and Khateeb (preacher) of the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid an-Nabawi) in Madinah since 1979, with a brief period as Imam of Masjid al-Haram in Mecca in 1981. He has also been a lecturer of Islamic jurisprudence and Tawheed at the Islamic University of Madinah and is involved in committees for reviewing Quranic copies and recordings.
