1984, written by George Orwell and published in 1949, is a dystopian novel set in a frightening future where the world is controlled by totalitarian governments. The story takes place in Oceania, a society ruled by the Party and its mysterious leader, Big Brother. The government controls every aspect of people's lives through constant surveillance, propaganda and manipulation of information. Even people's thoughts and feelings are monitored. The main character, Winston Smith, works at the Ministry of Truth, where he changes historical records to match the Party's version of reality. However, Winston secretly hates the regime and dreams of freedom. When he falls in love with Julia, he begins to rebel against the system, risking his life.Through this novel, Orwell explores important themes such as the loss of freedom, the abuse of power, censorship and the manipulation of truth. 1984 is a powerful warning about the dangers of dictatorship and a society where individuals have no right to think freely. Despite being written many decades ago, its message remains relevant today. Read by Peter Tucker
