The story is about Maud, a 70-year-old spinster who lives with and takes care of Bessie, her 90-year-old mother, who is suffering from dementia. Their apartment is in a three-story red-brick building in what was once a nice mostly Jewish neighborhood that is no longer mostly Jewish or nice. The building, like the neighborhood has turned seedy. Maud’s family has moved out to the suburbs. Suddenly, Maud, who finds her excitement buying lottery tickets and hoping for a way out of her plight, finds she’s holding a ticket potentially worth $10 million.
