What’s This Podcast
About?

Have you ever wondered how Science and Foreign Policy Intersect? The Office of the Science and Technology Adviser to the Secretary of State (STAS) is proud to present a special two-part podcast called: "How to think like a Scientist Diplomat" which tells the stories of six former Jefferson Science Fellows. Jefferson Science Fellowships are an innovative model for engaging faculty in the U.S. foreign policy and international development process through a one-year immersive experience at the U.S. Department of State or the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in partnership with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). Fellows are embedded at State or USAID where they become conversant in operations and processes while contributing their technical expertise to policy formulation and implementation. STAS supports the Jefferson Science Fellows at the Department of State and was created in 2000 by then Secretary of State Madeline Albright in response to a 1999 study by the U.S. National Research Council on how the Department could incorporate science, technology, and health expertise in the formulation and implementation of foreign policy. Building on over two decades of activities, STAS remains a vibrant resource to Department leadership, senior Foreign Service and Civil Service officials, and bureaus across the Department. STAS also serves as a central bridge between the Department and the vast STI community in the United States and throughout the world.
