Isha Upanishad
The term Upanishad (upa-ni-shad) comes from Sanskrit, meaning to sit down near, symbolizing the act of gathering with a teacher for deep discussion and experiential learning. With around 200 Upanishads known to exist—many lost but cited in others—these ancient texts were traditionally kept secret and passed down orally as Shlokas. The Isha Upanishad, or Ishavasya Upanishad, is among the shortest yet most pivotal, consisting of just 18 poetic verses. As the fortieth and final chapter of the White Yajur-veda, it offers profound insights. Isha (ईश) translates to ruler or master, while vāsyam (वास्य) means enveloped by. Scholars date its composition to the first millennium BCE. The Isha Upanishad is one of the 11 principal texts discussed by Sankara in his Vedanta-Sutras commentary, alongside others like the Chandogya and Aitareya.
