What's This Podcast
About?

Hello, hello everyone, and welcome to Not Your Nanna’s Norms! Each month, we dive into the wonderfully weird world of social norms and the unwritten rules that guide our behaviour in different settings. What actually happens in female public toilets — and is it different for men? Why do we queue the way we do? What is the silent choreography of lifts and elevators? How are we “supposed” to behave on public transport? … and so much more. Along the way, we’ll explore how factors like culture, age, gender, class, and religion shape these everyday expectations. My goal is to make sociology fun, accessible, and a little bit cheeky — something anyone can enjoy, not just the lucky few who’ve taken a sociology class. My hope is that we learn from each other, share stories, compare experiences, and build a curious, diverse community. Together, we’ll unpack how norms differ across places, cultures, generations, and contexts. More than anything, I want this to be an engaging, welcoming space — a home for all the Not Your Nanna’s Norms enthusiasts out there. Thank you so much for listening and supporting the show. With gratitude, Dr Amy (Sociologist & Educator)
