Brother Lawrence, born Nicholas Herman around 1610 in the Duchy of Lorraine, France, lived a remarkable life marked by both hardship and profound spiritual insight. After a tumultuous youth that included serving as a soldier during the Thirty Years War and suffering a debilitating injury, he found his calling in a monastery in Paris. Despite his humble beginnings as a clumsy footman and later roles as a cook and sandal repairer, Brother Lawrence embodied a deep devotion to God, discovering a pure and uncomplicated way to live in His presence. Over the course of his forty-year journey, he faced significant trials, yet his gentle spirit and joyful heart shone through. It wasnt until after his death in 1691 that his letters and conversations were compiled into the beloved book The Practice of the Presence of God.
