The Nicholson Collection of Antiquities

What’s This Podcast
About?

Egypt, Greece, Cyprus, Ancient Rome and the Middle East. The University of Sydney’s Nicholson Collection of antiquities is now on display at the University’s state of the art Chau Chak Wing Museum. The 1850’s was an era of exotic travel, a time of romantic ideals, a time of desire, and a time of interest in the collection and preservation of ancient artefacts. Founding Fellow and Chancellor, Sir Charles Nicholson adventured extensively throughout these Mediterranean regions to create what is today the largest collection of antiquities in the Southern Hemisphere. In this podcast series we talk to the University’s in-house archeologists, curators, and specialists about the significance of these objects. We hear about the fascinating stories they tell about the ancient cultures and civilisations that produced them. We hear about the work of the university’s archeologists and the archeological digs they have been and still are involved in. We also speak to eminent scholar Professor Vrasidas Karalis about the current state of play with the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Athens’ purpose built Acropolis Museum.
