What’s This Podcast
About?

Ubaydullah Evans is the first Scholar-in-Residence at the American Learning Institute for Muslims (ALIM), a position that reflects his dedication to traditional Islamic scholarship and American Muslim life. Ubaydullah Evans converted to Islam while still in high school, a decision that shaped the direction of his life and learning. After embracing Islam, he began studying foundational Islamic texts with local scholars while earning a journalism degree from Columbia College in Chicago. Driven by a desire to deepen his religious knowledge, Ubaydullah went on to study at the Institute of Islamic Education (IIE) in the Chicago area. He later continued his Islamic education overseas, spending time in Tarim, Yemen, and then enrolling at Al-Azhar University in Cairo. There, he became the first African American to graduate from its Shari’a program—a historic achievement that underscores both his perseverance and scholarly capability. In addition to his work at ALIM, Shaykh Ubaydullah is actively involved in community engagement and spiritual education through institutions like the Ta’leef Collective and the Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN). His teaching blends classical Islamic scholarship with a keen awareness of contemporary American challenges, particularly those facing Muslim youth and urban communities. Whether through public lectures, retreats, or mentoring, he aims to nurture grounded, spiritually aware leaders who can navigate modern life with integrity and purpose. Ubaydullah Evans continues to inspire as a thought leader and educator who bridges traditional Islamic learning and modern American realities. His work is especially impactful for converts and second-generation Muslims seeking a rooted, authentic path in today’s world.
