《牛天赐传》是老舍以民国初年北京为背景创作的讽刺小说，讲述弃婴牛天赐被无子牛氏夫妇收养，饱受溺爱却遭畸形家教；养父马马虎虎，养母官气十足。天赐在奶妈、家仆与老师的影响中成长，既保留童真也常感迷惘。成年前夕，养母病逝、家道中落、亲戚夺产，曾有的庇护瓦解，天赐陷入人生危机；关键时刻，昔日受恩的老师出现，带来一线转机。老舍以京味幽默与冷峻同情，细描小市民成长的困窘与时代下“小英雄”的萌芽，耐人寻味。
