《佛遗教经》是佛遗教经记录佛陀临入涅槃前对弟子的最后教诲。经中以修行纲要的形式，教导弟子以持戒为本，远离放逸，少欲知足，精进修行。佛陀强调应守护身口意，节制贪欲，远离愤怒与妄语，安住正念，以智慧观察诸法无常、苦、无我。并告诫弟子以戒为师、法为灯，在佛灭度后依正法而行，不依个人权威。整部经的核心，是提醒修行者在末法时代仍能以戒定慧为根本，断除烦恼，趋向解脱。
