King Lear, an aging monarch, decides to divide his kingdom among his three daughters based on their declarations of love. His two eldest, Goneril and Regan, flatter him falsely, while his youngest, Cordelia, speaks honestly and is disowned. Betrayed by Goneril and Regan, Lear descends into madness as a storm rages. Meanwhile, the noble Gloucester is deceived by his illegitimate son, Edmund, and suffers a brutal fate.
